Forest Glen
Lyrics by Rebecca Adams and Gary Krajicek
© 1968 Upstate Wonderland Music/Krajibaby Music

Originally performed by Sugar & Ames

Forest Glen was one of the more bizarre Sugar & Ames songs. The macabre lyrics play ironically against an infectious, almost sugary, happy melody. The first true collaboration between Rebecca Adams and Gary Krajicek, this song always produced a love-hate reaction from audiences.

Originally written by Rebecca Adams in 1966, before the founding of S & A, the first Forest Glen was a happy love song. But the name "Forest Glen" invoked a witchcraft image in the mind of Gary Krajicek and it was rewritten in the early band sessions to be about a spurned lover casting a midnight spell to get back her man. The ironic twist was good, but the witchcraft metaphor didn't quite work, and in the fall of 1968, the final "Forest Glen" was conceived, from the eyes of a young widow sneaking off to the woods to take her own life and be with her lost love.
[Backing]
La-la, la-la, la, la, la
Tonight at the forest glen.
La-la, la-la, la, la, la
Tonight at the forest glen.

Now that the days are short and leaves are fallin down,
Tonight I'll slip away from the edge of town.
Deep in the woods I know there's a special place,
And when I'm all alone, I'll finally see your face.

[Chorus]
I'll be with you tonight
In the forest glen.
Beneath the pale moonlight
In the forest glen.
I've terribly missed you,
But I'll be able to kiss you,
In the forest glen.

You love me still I know, I saw it in your eyes.
I looked into them and it left me hypnotized.
Now I cannot forget, the love that we once shared.
Your soft and tender touch, that showed me that you cared.

I don't know what to do, I'm still in love with you
I always think of you, makes me cra-cra-crazy...

[Chorus]

It was a year ago that you went away.
I haven't been the same since that very day.
But I'll be happy soon with the one I love.
When we're together in the kingdom up above.

I know just what to do, I'm still in love with you
And I'm gonna be with you, all-all-all the time...

[Chorus]

[Repeat Backing, fade out]
